Sea kayaking to Suvisaaristo, Espoo

Paddled alone to Espoo Suvisaaristo, namely to Pentala island. Altogether about 38km with a couple of short breaks. Here's the route, paddled anti clockwise.

During the day trip, reached for the first time in my paddling career a 1000km limit per a season !

The first three hours there was a mild wind and a cloudy sky, but when returning clouds disappeared and the sun shined beautifully. Tailwind helped returning a lot.

Saw a couple of small venison in one of the islands. Could not catch them by a camera.

Paddled with a friend of mine to Espoo archipelago.  There was an unbelievable fog almost all the time, one could not see more than just a few meters ahead. Had a break in Vasikkasaari island. Returned back to Helsinki by circling Miessaari island from south direction.  The fog started quickly disappear when we approached near to Käärmesaari island, bringing cloudless blue sunny sky.

Absolutely one of the nicest weather conditions to experience by paddling.

After some years went to see a classic Finland-Sweden Athletic event. This was extremely popular some decades ago, although it has still kept its glamour.

Day 1

Flew to Ivalo and took a bus to Kiilopää. Stayed at the hotel there for two days. The idea was to do some hiking a couple of days in Urho Kekkonen National Park to be prepared for a longer hiking trip at Lemmenjoki National Park later on at the same week.

At arriving day the weather was sunny and warm, about +24C.  As a positive surprise, there were no mosquitoes at all (why?). Instead, there were hundreds of orienteering runners competing for National Championship of Fell Orienteering. Must have been very demanding, up and down the fell, nature looking mostly the same everywhere or hiding well all special interest points in the map.

Climbed to the top of Kiilopää fell. The climb was an easy task as it was not too steep.

Tried the very first time to take an underwater photo, with not so good results. The water was crystal clear but freezingly cold.

Came down northern part of the fell. Although there was not any path in the beginning it was easy to come down and spot another path down in the valley which was leading back to the hotel.

Nature was not yet in autumn colours, but some individual plants showed their best.

Walked altogether about 6km.  Had a dinner at the hotel bar. All in all a nice welcoming day in Lapland.

Day 2

Disappointing view from the window in the morning; clouds were very low and rain was starting at any minute. Temperature was dropped to some +15C, also the wind seemed to be stronger than yesterday.  The breakfast gave a boost so despite lousy weather the plan was to circle Kiilopää fell anti clockwise, approx. 22km.  Friends promised to pick me up afternoon, so there was no time to loose in morning.  

Started hiking at about 9am.  Although visibility was sometimes only about few meters the scenery was still astonishing, very rural and poor plants.

The path towards Rautulampi cabin was more or less uphill. Just before reaching the cabin, some reindeer came on path. Strange enough they were quite friendly allowing some photos to be taken.

Who are you?

The speed was good, about 5km/h and the cabin was reached in about 2h 20mins, distance some 11km.  There were some people in the cabin drying their clothes.  Although the rain was light the wind on top of the fells made it feel stronger and pushed it in horisontal direction. 

A short break at cabin; had some preprepared coffee and sandwiches with snacks. These gave necessary boost to continue hiking now down the valley towards Luulampi cabin.  Now the rain was constant. The path followed a creek which was increasing all the time transforming into a small river.  Horisontally the path was quite flat. Distance was about 7km.  Spotted again some reindeer, some of them having really big horns.

Reached the cabin again in good speed. However, now the body felt the distance and spent time and put to wonder the real distance back to the hotel.  There were some people at the cabin drying their clothes.  Some coffee and snacks brought energy back to the body. People at the cabin instructed a more direct route back to the hotel. Decided to take that shorter route, signing post showing about 4km.  

That was a heavy route, directing straight over the fell.  Happily but being really exhausted reaching the hotel after some 22km of hiking in rain and wind was a great reward. 

A shower and dry clothes felt rewarding.  Tried to dry some clothes an hour, checked out from the hotel. Friends picked me up and we started to head towards Lemmenjoki. 

For the very first time, Kiilopää gave a very good feeling and impression on wild and rural nature.  Especially treeless areas near top of the fells were most beautiful to see.

Paddled to a distant Torra Lövö island on Espoo archipelago. Sunny and warm day with low wind. Altogether about 26km of paddling. This was 32nd time of kayaking this season, having now total of 760km.

Kayaking on Puulavesi lake district, Finland

Olimme kaverin kanssa melomassa kajakeilla Puulavedellä kolme päivää. Sää oli koko ajan loistava, joka päivä hellepäivä, sekä pientä tuulta viilentämässä kajakissa istujaa (viimeisenä päivänä tuuli oli jo kovempaa, joka mukavasti viilensi yli +30C päivämelontaa).  Lämmin ilma ja vesi houkuttelivat useisiin uimataukoihin.

Itselleni tämä oli ensimmäinen kerta ko. järvialueella. Kirkas vesi, erämaan tuntu, rapakivi(?)-kalliot, sekä lukuisat saaret näyttivät upeilta merimelojalle. Karttaa piti lukea lähes koko ajan, ettei eksynyt toivotulta reitiltä, sillä samannäköiset saaret tekivät reittimelonnan tosi haasteelliseksi. Alueesta on olemassa säänkestävä kartta (1:50000), jonka sain tilaamalla Kangasniemen kunnalta.

Yövyimme telttaillen melojien rantautumispaikoilla (Soisalonselkä, sekä Uitonniemi). Rantautumispaikat oli merkattu karttaan, sekä myös itse luonnossa. Koko vesistö oli melko hiljainen ihmisistä, reissun aikana törmäsimme vain pariin melojaan. Veneiden määräkään ei tuntunut kovin isolta.

Linnusto näytti erilaiselta rannikon lintuihin verrattuna.  Kyhmyjoutsenet vaihtuivat laulujoutseniin, mutta ylivoimaisesti näyttävin ryhmä olivat kuikka-perheet. Niiden eri ääntelyt aamulla, päivällä ja varsinkin illalla

oli jokapäiväistä soittoa.  Ehkä näyttävintä oli kuikan lentoonlähtö, sekä lento matalalla, noin metrin korkeudella vedenpinnasta, huimaa menoa.

Vaikka vesi oli yleisesti ruskeahkoa, humus-pitoista, oli se kuitenkin hyvin kirkasta, joka helpotti kivien huomioimista melotessa.

1. päivä (Ti 27.7.2010), Väinölänsaari ympäri, n. 30km

Lämmin päivä, n +28C, eikä juuri pilviä. Lähtö oli Väinälönsaaren Pohjoisrannasta (Lutakontie 103), josta lähdimme kiertämään Väinölänsaarta vastapäivään. Lievä vastatuuli alussa ei hidastanut juuri menoa. 1. tauko oli Väinölänsaaren sillalla, Eteläselällä. Tauon jälkeen lieväkin myötätuuli tuntui mukavalta Vanhonsalmessa.

Päästessämme saaren länsipuolelle, tutustuimme Alttarisaareen, sen kuuluisaan kiveen. Sitten alkoi jo päivän melonta tuntua jäsenissä ja päätimme jäädä lähimmälle rantautumispaikalle, joka oli Soisalonselkä. Todella upea pieni kalliosaari. Teltanpystytyksen jälkeen oli vuorossa uintia, iltaruokailua, sekä lisää uintia.  Kuikka vaihtoi päivän äänensä ns. kuuluisampaan kuikanlauluun. Auringonlasku oli näyttävä, kuten myös öinen kuutamo. Hieman liian kuuma nukkua teltassa, eikä joustinpatjan vaihtuminen sentinpaksuiseen ilmapatjaan tuntunut riittävän.  Kuiva sää on ilmeisesti vähentänyt hyttysten määrää, eivät ainakaan inisseet teltan ympärillä koko yötä.

2. päivä (Ke 28.7.2010), Soisalonselkä - Uitonniemi, n. 33km

Vieläkin lämpimämpi päivä, n. +30C, eikä juuri pilviä, kevyttä tuulta. Aamu kului uiden, sekä aamiaista valmistellen ja nauttien.

Kamat kasaan ja kajakkiin, suuntana Papusaari. Iso joukko turisteja ei kannustanut meitä rantautumaan. Suunta kohti Laajalahden rantautumispaikkaa, jonka hiekkaranta houkutteli päivän toiset uinnit. Siitä suunta yli Säkkisalonsalmen kohti Iso Paatsalon saarta, jossa ihmettelimme lyhyen aikaa Korppivuorta, ennen saapumista Pieni Paatsalo rantautumispaikalle. Siellä oli iso ja hieno hiekkaranta, houkutellen uintiin ja vedessä lekotteluun. Aamulla valmistellut termospullokahvit, sekä voileivät maistuivat, sekä päivän pakolliset energiapatukat. Onneksi tuli otettua paljon vettä mukaan tälle retkelle. Täältä matka jatkui pikku saaria kierrellen Uitonniemen rantautumispaikalle.  Illan ohjelma oli taas sama; uintia, ruoanlaittoa, syömistä, kuikka-perheen touhuamisen seuraamista, auringonlaskua jne.

3. päivä (To 29.7.2010), Uitonniemi - Väinölänsaari, n. 30km

Lämpimin päivä, n. +33C. Tuuli yltyi aamuruokailun aikana selvästi. Lisäksi huomasimme, että aurinko ei paistanut kirkaasti vaan ilmassa oli kuin savusumua (hajutonta?). Illalla kotona tekstitv kertoi ko. savujen olleen Venäjältä tulleita metsäpalosavuja. Matka alkoi Puulansalmen kautta kohti Pientä Paatsaloa. Vaikka melontasuunta vaihtui alun koillisesta kaakkoon/etelään, kohtasimme koko ajan vastatuulta. Kahden päivän melonnan jälkeen sitä alkoi jo kaipaamaan myötätuulta.  Lähetyessämme Pientä Paatsaloa, tuuli yltyi ja nosti aallonkorkeutta selvästi, tuullen suoraan Karttuunselältä. Aikomus oli kiertää Puukonsaari eteläkautta, mutta sää näytti liian haastavalta. Nopea muutos reittiin ja kiersimme Puulansaaren pohjoispuolelta, Simpiänselän puolelta, jossa tuuli ei ollut läheskään niin kova. Vaikka Säkkisalonniemessä oli vastatuuli, oli se kuitenkin hyvin paljon pienempi kuin Puulansaaren toisella puolella (ja se tuntuin ihmeelliseltä).  Päästessämme Väinölänsaaren pohjoisrantaan, melontakaverini löysi elävän sammakon kajakistaan, istuimen alta. Elämä sillä jatkui, nyt vaan eri saaressa. Reissun viimeiset uinnit heti kajakkien tyhjennysten jälkeen päätti tämän retken.  Kajakit auton katolle ja nokka kohti kotoa.

Puulavesi oli hieno kokemus ensikertalaiselle.

Spent some days with a friend of mine on Puulavesi lake district near city of St Michel (Mikkeli in Finnish). Weather was excellent, between +26  to +33 Celcius with lots of sunshine and relatively low wind. We paddled about 30km every day and stayed overnight on predefined camping islands. Due to very warm weather, each day on the kayak were interrupted by short swimming breaks.

Did my first ever geocaching event with a friend of mine. The weather was very warm, nearly +30C. Walked about 17km altogether and found nearly 20 caches.  A very nice experience and would certainly do something similar again.
